Step 2

Pinning the tree (optional)

In order to get the tree affixed well to the groundwork base, it is recommended that the tree gets pinned.  Drill a small hole into the bottom of the tree.  Insert metal rod (such as a cut piece of a paper clip) & glue

Step 3

Separate wads of wool.

The most common mistake in working with the foliage base is to use too much material.  Pick out a small amount of steel fibers from a pad and work it with your fingers until it forms a very thin and rather transparent sheet. It does not need to be uniform and, in fact, diversity mimics mother nature.  The ultimate goal is to stretch and pull the steel wool fibers until all balls or wads of material are pulled well apart  wads of wool.jpg (37272 bytes)
Step 4

Affix the steel fibers to tree branches.

These balls will cling very easily to the tree armature without using glue. tree with steel wool.jpg (37956 bytes)
Step 5

Spray the steel wool wads with glue or hair spray.

Make sure to spay on the underneath branches of the tree, all sides, and top.  You can do this in stages (for example, bottom first only). spray the wool.jpg (44178 bytes)
Step 6

Apply foliage to areas that have been sprayed.

In this case, only the bottom underside of the branches were sprayed with glue, and foliage applied, and after application, process was repeated for top and side of tree. foliage appied to bottom only.jpg (37451 bytes)
Step 7

Repeat Step 5

Repeat Step 5 for top & sides of tree and apply foliage.  After flocking, use a toothpick to pull the canopy out a bit so that the canopy is not too evenly domed. You want a rather imperfect dome as in real life trees.
